I read the original novel many times as a teenager decades ago
Referenced in Korman Productions Deep Dive TV Podcast: Earth Abides on MGM+ Deep Dive Episode 1 “Alone” with Dave and Stacie (2024). It’s a great story with lots of powerful imagery, highly recommended, if a bit dated—published in 1949, seventy-five years ago. While I’ve often wondered over the years if it would become a movie, I wasn’t expecting this limited series adaptation, so I was very surprised when it came along.
I finished it saying, “Wow!
Also very worried, as it remains one of my all-time favorite reads. “Men come and go, but the earth remains” is a quote I’ve used a lot. With some trepidation, I watched the first episode.

That was so good!” Watching Ish stare at the smoke from Em’s house brought the imagery from the book to life. Sure, out of necessity, it’s been modernized in many ways, but important aspects of the plot remain effectively unchanged. Other changes, like limiting Ish’s journey to simply Las Vegas instead of Atlantic City, make sense and aren’t significant to the characters’ interactions.

Plus, the way the book is structured makes a limited series a great production choice. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of this series. “World Without End!” “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of this month.
